There is a difference between cage free and free range. If they are free range, the chickens are allowed time to walk around outside it doesn't matter how much space they have. Whereas, cage free eggs may mean they aren't in a cage but they substitute that for packing tonnes of chickens into a barn. Cage eggs are just as the name suggests, the chickens are stuck in cages and their eggs are collected by machines. Stocking density is usually no more than 10 000 chickens per hectare (1 chicken per square metre). Most chicken farms do not follow this rule as they have found many loopholes to avoid it.
Our cafe uses free range eggs because we believe that they are the best quality eggs even though the prices are higher than cage eggs. Eggs are high in nutrients such as protein, vitamin B2, selenium, vitamin D and minerals such as zinc, iron and copper.
